Learning Opportunities at Ballarat Little Learners

We offer a range of learning opportunities to enhance children's development.

Kelly Sports

We have developed strong connections with Kelly Sports, and implement a sports program during Term 2 and Term 4 each year. The sports program can take place at Russel Square oval or at the service depending on the day. When we implement the program at Russel square we use the Victoria street foot paths, and train bridge to cross over at Stawell street, and cross Scott parade to reach our destination. On commencement of the program each term, we complete practice excursions to ensure children’s awareness of safety procedures. Through the sports program children learn a variety of skills combining gross and fine motor movement, coordination and balance to achieve increasingly complex patterns, manipulate equipment with increasing competence and skill, show increasing awareness of healthy lifestyles, and show enthusiasm for participating in physical play.

Incursions

We implement incursions at Ballarat Little Learners such as dental visits, dog safety, visits from the zoo, families bringing in baby animals from home, such a ducklings, lambs, calfs, guinea pigs and we also have a centre pet (Rosie the rabbit).

Art/Craft/Science

Let's get creative..... Children have the opportunity to explore a variety of art and craft, which incorporates maths and science concepts for the children to question, analyse and respond to change. Children are exposed to recycled materials in art experience and are able to freely explore materials. Children learn skills in cutting, pasting, painting, drawing, collaging. Children develop dispositions for learning such as curiosity, cooperation, confidence, creativity, commitment, enthusiasm, persistence, imagination and reflexivity.

Cooking

Children have the opportunities to participate in cooking experiences and are offered a variety of cooking experiences using different techniques and incorporating other cultures and traditions. Through being exposed to cooking opportunities, children show an increasing awareness of healthy lifestyles and nutrition, and have the opportunity to share their own traditions, cultures and experiences with other children within these opportunities. Cooking provides opportunities for group engagement, and helps children to develop a positive connection to all different types of foods including fruits and vegetables. Forming a positive experience with fresh foods is so important because healthy foods are the foundation for good nutrition.

Community Garden

At Ballarat Little Learners we implement spontaneous excursions to the community garden on the corner of Dyte Parade and Queens street, through engagement with the community, children begin to recognise that they have the right to belong to many communities, broaden their understanding on the world in which they live and show growing appreciation and care for the natural and built environment. Through excursions to the community garden children explore relationships with other living and non-living things to observe, notice and respond to change.

Outdoor learning opportunities

Children have a variety of different learning opportunities outdoors, such as water play, cooking, exploring the sand in  a variety of different ways, watering the gardens, gardening, plating seeds, exploring the rain and splashing in puddles, musical instruments, climbing, bikes, art and craft.

We celebrate cultures and diversity, and incorporate this into our programs/curriculum's for children to learn about the world in which they live, we celebrate Naidoc week, reconciliation day, Chinese New year, Easter, Christmas, Birthdays etc... and set up play spaces their reflect diversity. Children develop a sense of belonging to groups and communities and an understanding of the reciprocal rights and responsibilities necessary for active civic participation, Children respond to diversity with respect, Children become aware of fairness, and children develop knowledgeable and confident self-identities.
At Ballarat Little Learners, children have the opportunity to participate in natural and built environments, and learn about recycling into everyday practices. We use recycled materials for the children to create art and use their imaginations.
